Puppy Mill Protest

Awareness group protesting purchase of puppy mill puppies this holiday season
Novi - The approach of the holidays signals one thing- the rush to buy gifts.  For some this could mean a new puppy from a local pet store, without knowing where that puppy actually comes from.

Many Saturdays and the occasional weekday, large signs reading “Don’t Support Puppy MIlls” and “Boycott Petland” cover the lawns in front of Twelve Oaks Mall.  Members of Puppy Mill Awareness of Southeast Michigan stood on the lawn listening to people’s car horns in response to their “Honk if You Support Us” sign.  They are doing more protests now than ever to stop people from buying pet store puppies in time for the holidays.

Approval of district brings Novi hotel plan to next level

Novi, Mich.- The Novi City Council passed a motion 5-1 at Tuesday’s meeting to create a commericial district for 46100 Grand River Avenue, the proposed site of a new hotel adjacent to Suburban Collection Showplace.

“We need to create, to expand to provide for the needs of the center in the future to support and sustain positive economic impact,” said Blair Bowman, owner and president of Suburban Collection Showplace.

Suburban Collection Showplace, a banquet, conference, and exposition center known as Rock Financial Showplace until early 2011, is one of few event centers of its kind without an on-site hotel.  The proposal to build one is met with controversy from other hotel representatives in the area that fear their business being taken away.  Managers of the Crowne Plaza and Sheraton Detroit Novi hotels spoke of area hotels already hurting for rooms, with an average capacity of 60 percent.

“People will still consider where they stay,” said Bowman.  “Hotels won’t lose all rooms that Suburban Collection has brought them.”

Zenyatta "The Queen"

Sometimes four inches is all that separates the victor from the defeated.  In the case of the 2010 Breeder’s Cup Classic, the well known filly Zenyatta lost, and victory fell to accomplished colt Blame.

Before this last race, Zenyatta was undefeated.  From her three year old season to her current season as a six-year-old, she had a 19-0 record and was going for 20 wins before retiring as a broodmare.  Her beauty and elegance had many watching, including non-race fans.  She made Oprah’s “Most Influential Women of the Year” list.  “I did not know who she was until the weekend of the race, said Laura Saale, a horse owner and rider of South Lyon, Mich. “I watched a special which documented the details of her superior physique and athleticism - about why she was built to win.”  Some would argue that a filly racing against the boys was in over her head to start with, but all it did was give Zenyatta something to prove all along.

The Strike of a Match

Flames engulf a match, just like the one that caused Pam O'Neall's burns.
